A North Conway mountain weekend starts with clean air: cascades in the trees, a lake under granite, a fall road curling away, then dinner lights back in town.

First move

Spend the clearest daylight outside, then come back to town before the day frays.

Scenic drive

Kancamagus Highway: 34.5 miles of forest road

From the Conway side, treat the Kanc as a half-day rhythm: Swift River pullouts, Lower Falls, Rocky Gorge, Sabbaday Falls, and one overlook instead of every stop on the map.

Easy waterfall

Diana's Baths: short, popular, and best early

The walk is roughly a mile round trip to granite pools and cascades. It is easy by White Mountains standards, but parking pressure makes an early or late-day visit feel much better.

Lake and ledge

Echo Lake, Cathedral Ledge, and Whitehorse views

Use Echo Lake for the softer family stop, then choose Cathedral Ledge for the big view. In warm months the auto road can make the overlook possible without turning the day into a long hike.

Waypoints

Use a few named stops so the White Mountains day has shape.

A strong first North Conway mountain day does not need to chase Mount Washington. Start close with Echo Lake or Diana's Baths, then use the Kancamagus for a scenic-drive afternoon if weather is kind. If the group wants a bigger hiking day, push toward Crawford Notch and make Mount Willard or the notch viewpoints the main event.

In foliage season, build in patience. In winter, treat road status, ice, and daylight as the plan-makers. In summer, water stops are the reward, but they are also the crowded stops.
