North Conway crowds a working rail depot, the Kancamagus, and tax-free outlet stores into one valley, so the real weekend question is which one gets the blue-sky hours.

North Conway combines a compact village and outlet district with short drives to cascades, lakes, ledges, and White Mountains roads.

Two nights leave Friday for the village and Saturday for Settlers Green plus West Side Road or the Kancamagus.

Stay

A historic resort at the north end of North Conway Village, close to Main Street, Schouler Park, and the railroad station for evenings that do not require another drive.

Settlers Green, then West Side Road or the Kancamagus

Shop Settlers Green in one block, then choose Diana's Baths, Echo Lake, or the Kancamagus according to weather, parking, and daylight.

Village, Route 16, and one mountain road

Do not cross the valley repeatedly between the Kancamagus, Crawford Notch, and West Side Road.

Diana's Baths fits dry weather and a short forest walk. Echo Lake and Cathedral Ledge suit a picnic and overlook when park and auto-road access allow. The Kancamagus is the longer scenic-drive choice.
